- Red Bull Rampage, Utah; 28-3 October 2004 -

KYLE STRAIT CROWNED KING OF RAMPAGE

Four days of gruelling mountain biking in Utah’s hot and treacherous rocky mountains came to an end today, as America’s Kyle Strait took first place at the fourth and final Red Bull Rampage.

With no set course and no harsh rules, 30 of the world’s best mountain bikers congregated for the last time to take on the precarious clifftops at this unique mountain bike freeride competition. Some of the best riders from around the world including; last year’s champion Cedric Gracia, Ireland’s Glyn O’Brien as well as Kyle Strait, Gee Atherton and Steve Romaniuk (who took the first three places respectively).

Strait comments: “It’s a great honour to have won this prestigious competition, especially with so many talented riders taking part.”

Kyle Strait from America and British rider Gee Atherton battled head-to head in the final, with Atherton finally taking second place. This is a colossal achievement for the nineteen-year-old from Shropshire. Knowing that the competition was fierce, Gee went into his final run with determination: “I really liked my line, but I knew I needed to step it up so I added in another drop to my line. I stuck the Super T drop -- a 30 foot gap.”

Gee Atherton

For its fourth and final time, Red Bull Rampage took over Virgin, Utah as the riders took to the rocky mountains of the Kolob Reservoir Road verging on Zion National Park.

Going out on a ‘high’ the event finals came with a twist this year – not only was it held on Halloween, but in a totally new area of landscape - spanning a quarter of a mile from the first day’s area and 1,200 feet in height. This new terrain had potential for more flow and gap jumps, a wall ride, three ridges for riders to choose from, and a dramatic horseshoe ridge at the bottom.

Kyle Strait

The competitors were judged on control, amplitude, style, fluidity, and the difficulty of the line they choose. Judge Marla Streb stated, “I am blown away. As a rider myself, I am even more impressed because I know how hard this is. Even a five-foot drop is difficult and these guys are doing 70-foot jumps. They are modern day gladiators.”

And now, Rampage fans can experience this adrenaline-pumping action via the virtual reality simulator at: www.redbullrampage.com/virtual.php

- SCOTLAND will host MTB world champs 2007

SCOTLAND WINS BID TO HOST MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2007

Fort William in the Scottish highlands, has won its bid to host the Mountain Bike World Championships in September 2007, despite strong competition from Canada and Australia. The decision was announced Monday 27 September 2004 by the UCI (International Cycle Union), cycling's international governing body, in Bardolino, near Verona, Italy.

For the mountain bike disciplines of Downhill, 4-Cross and Trials, The UCI Mountain Bike World Championships is the most important and prestigious international competition in the calendar. For Cross Country it is second only to the Olympics. The World Championships at Fort William will be the last major mountain bike cross country competition before the Bejing Olympics in 2008 and a key event for all riders and their national cycling federations.

At the World Championships, an annual competition with the emphasis firmly on riding for country rather than for trade teams and sponsors, 700 plus competitors from more than 45 nations worldwide compete across the four mountain bike disciplines of Cross Country, Downhill, 4-Cross and Trials for a total of 14 World Championship titles.

Frank McAveety, MSP, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, said: 'This is terrific news for the Highlands and for Scotland. Fort William has been so successful at hosting Mountain Bike World Cups in the past that the UCI would like to take advantage of the Nevis Range facilities again and host a full championship. I was in Fort William myself this year to see some of the best riders in the world race on Scotland's spectacular and challenging terrain.

'The Mountain Bike World Championships, which has been supported by the Executive through EventScotland, will draw thousands of enthusiasts from all over the globe to Scotland. The economic and tourism benefits to the area cannot be overestimated, and this event fits well with our aim of making Scotland a major events destination by 2015.

'Well done to everyone involved in the bidding process. The 2007 Mountain Bike World Championships will form part of a terrific series of events for the Highlands during Scotland's Year of Highland Culture.' The Nevis Range ski area and Leanachan Forest, Fort William, home of the World Championships in 2007, has successfully hosted rounds of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in 2002, 2003 and 2004, firmly establishing itself as one of the best competition venues in the world with a reputation for high standards, good organisation and excellent courses; and winning a number of top sporting and industry awards in the process. The profile, scale, complexity and importance of hosting the Mountain Bike World Championships is about four times that of a round of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup series.

With the recent announcement by the UCI that Fort William is to host the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Finals in September 2005, an extensive programme of mountain bike events leading up to the World Championships in 2007 is now guaranteed. At this key event of the mountain bike calendar, the last in the eight race series played out over six months, the 2005 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Champions of Downhill, Cross Country and 4-Cross, for elite men and women, will be crowned.

Mike Jardine from Rare Management, Organisers of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup events at Fort William and the driving force behind the 2007 World Championships bid said: 'This is fantastic recognition of Fort William's success on the global stage and a real boost for everyone who has worked so hard to make mountain biking in Fort William such a special experience. Those who have been to the Fort William World Cup know what a great weekend the Scottish Highlands can
deliver. Now we've got the ultimate target, the most important single event in mountain biking. This gives us a unique opportunity to work with the venues, the funding partners, sponsors and the local community to deliver progressively bigger and better festivals of mountain biking in the next three years. Without doubt, 2007 will see the biggest ever celebration of mountain biking in the UK and the work starts now.'

Fort William is recognised by the UCI as a venue for mountain bike events that consistently draws large, very supportive and enthusiastic crowds from all over the UK and the rest of the world. It is anticipated that the World
Championships will attract more than 40,000 spectators on the key days of competition with a direct economic benefit to Fort William and the immediate Lochaber area in excess of £2 million.

Significant levels of international media coverage, including live terrestrial broadcast, are also expected at the event. At the World Championships in Lugano, Switzerland, in 2003, 379 print and broadcast media were accredited and more than 64 hours of television coverage of the competition was broadcast across 11 countries worldwide.

- New High Jump World Record at Siemens mobile X Lake Jump in Zürich

Austrian Roland Harrer wins High Jump and Best Trick category at Züri Fäscht

For the seventh time, the Siemens mobile X Lake Jump was a spectacular event highlight. This time, visitors of Switzerland’s largest public festival, the famous Züri Fäscht, could watch some of the world’s best mountain bike and BMX stunt riders speed down the six meters tall ramp, shoot off a two meters steep kicker, climbing up to six meters high in the air, then pull off a range of unique and original tricks before plunging into Lake Zürich.

On Friday, the twelve riders from around the world were battling to beat the current world record of 5.50 m set up by German Igor Obu at the last Siemens mobile X Lake Jump in Lugano. Despite unfavourable weather conditions with heavy rainfalls and strong winds, the competitors quickly approached the record mark and equalled it. Next the slat was moved up to 5.80 metres, a new world record mark which was jumped by two thirds of the field. And there was still plenty of space above the lath. So the hunt for a new world record continued. Finally, at 6.10 metres, two riders were left: Roland Harrer, a several time X Lake Jump winner from Austria and Frenchman Christopher Hatton, who participated at the Siemens mobile X Lake Jump for the first time. Pumped up by the audience, the speeded down the ramp pedalling as hard as they could, catapulted themselves over the kicker high into the air and flew over the slat not nearly touching it. The crowds screamed of excitement. Not only had they witnessed a new world record, but the winners had just beaten the old one by 60 centimetres.

In the competition Best Trick on Saturday the competitors had to perform different stunts like rotations, inverted tricks (head down) or freestyle stunts (e.g. Superman Seat Grab) in three consecutive runs. The riders from France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, England and the USA were marked by a panel of expert judges including Frorider Tarek Rasouli (GER), the several time X Lake Jump participant and currently injured Cyril Cabiak (FRA) as well a street style and trial rider Mario Preining (AUT) on criteria such as difficulty, execution, and amplitude. They had a tough job as one highlight chased the other. Slow motions on a giant screen slowly repeated what was hard for the eye to believe: two and a half Back Flips, Back Flips 360, No Hand Front Flip, 720 rotations. Igor "The Fireball" Obu from Germany ignited stunning pyrotechnical effects on his bike and on his back before he dived as a “glowing fireball” into the water.

With a Back Flip Tale Whip, a Back Flip 360 and a Double Back Flip 180, Austrian Roland Harrer received the highest scores from the jury (75.5) and won the Best Trick discipline followed by American Double Back Flip specialist John Jesme (69.2) and French Dirt Jumper Nicolas Duye (65.2), who also performed a stylish inverted tricks and a 360 flip.

In addition to prize money and funky urban designer bags, all winners were awarded with the brand new Siemens M65 outdoor mobile phone with Bike-o-meter - the perfect phone for the daredevil world of the Siemens mobile X Lake Jump community.

- Lisbon Downtown 2004

Once again Lisbon is receiving the world’s greatest riders, leaking Down Hill, in the 5th edition of the dread full falling of the historic area connecting S. Jorge Castle to Terreiro do Trigo Square in Alfama - THE LISBOA DOWNTOWN. This competition began in the year 2000 and has changed worldwide the down hills concept, challenging the riders to treadle away urban roads with quite distinct characteristics from the usual making the competition full of hard but spectacle obstacles such as the Portuguese stone roads, the iron rails of the trams, pumping over a car and finally the hundreds of steps that go down into the small streets of Alfama.
A unique course that riders run in high speed fighting against the clock, aiming a time record. The course is the same as the last year, therefore the main challenge is to break the records established by the 2003 winners. The British Steve Peat was the fastest among men sloping downwards 1000m in 1m32s788, while in women category the winner was the Swiss Marielle Saner with the time record of 1m44s527.Read on »»

Tue, 2nd December '03 - UCI WORLD CUP AT FORT WILLIAM 2003 WINS THIRD MAJOR AWARD -

The UCI (International Cycle Union) today announced that Fort William (Nevis Range ski area and the Forestry Commission), Scotland, had won the award for the best Downhill and 4 Cross Mountain Bike World Cups in the 2003 series.

The annual award is based on the votes of competitors, officials and media who have attended events in Scotland, Germany, France, Austria and Canada on the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup circuit. It is the second year running that Fort William has won the award and it reflects the huge success of this festival of mountain biking in the Scottish Highlands, watched by more than 15,000 spectators over two days of intense competition.

Mike Jardine from Rare Management, organisers of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at Fort William 2002 and 2003, said: '2003 has been a great year for Fort William, with international recognition of all of the hard work and commitment from everyone involved in putting on the World Cup. This shows that the Fort William event really is the best in the World - but we can still improve. Next year we'll be going for the best Cross Country award as well, although we still want a really challenging course, even if some of the riders find the Forestry Commission's Witch's Trail too tough!'

This is the third trophy for the 2003 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at Fort William. The event has already won the Singletrack Award for the best UK Cycling event and the Scottish Thistle Award for Area Tourism 2003.

Highlighting the sponsorship opportunities at the 2004 World Cup, Jardine added, 'For the past two years we've had outstanding support from public funding bodies such as sportscotland, EventScotland, VisitScotland, Lochaber Enterprise and Highland Council as well as a huge investment in mountain bike trails by the Forestry Commission. But now we need more commercial partners to guarantee the future success of the Fort William event. Despite the amazing potential for sponsors we've not yet found a company who wants to benefit from the World Cup effect.

'Long term, everyone involved is thinking even bigger, with a bid to host
the Mountain Bike World Championships in 2007 being seriously considered. Such a project can only happen if businesses back up what the public sector is already investing in the World Cup.'

The dates for the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at Fort William 2004 have been confirmed as 5 and 6 June.

The confirmed calendar for the 2004 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup is:
22-23 May Madrid (SPA) XC

See the full lineup of 2004 forks at the Marzocchi website...
Tue 14th October - Marzocchi 2004 -
The 2004 lineup of Marzocchi forks is now on their website. The biggest difference being that most forks have improved tyre clearance than the 2003 models, and that the 2004 Dirt Jumper series forks now have hard chromed chromo steel stanchions. I believe they went for this because they had a lot of alu stantions snapping when being used for dirtjumping. They also say the hard-chromed steel tubes offer unsurpassed buttery smooth, low stiction performance! Sounds good.. The Shiver is pretty much the same as last year, 190mm travel, and new sticker design, which a lot of people don't like! They also do the new '888' fork (here on the left) which is kinda like Marzocchi's version of the Boxxer. 200mm travel designed for downhill, and all black. There is also a new z-150 freeride fork. This also has steel stantions, although they are nitrite coated in black. Infact, a lot of marzocchi's 2004 range is either black, or have black bits on. To conclude, another nice range of forks, which have been improved in many ways from last years models. For more info, and pics of the 2004 range, visit the Marzocchi website.

Mon, 2nd June '03 - Fort William - Results -
Mike Jardine from event organisers Rare Management, said: 'The World Cup Downhill proved to be a spectacular climax to the most amazing weekend of mountain bike racing. The 7000 plus crowds flocked to the Nevis Range, lining the 2.6km course from top to bottom, creating a unique atmosphere for riders and visitors alike.

'The competition was intense with course records being broken and French riders winning the day in both the men's and women's races. All British hopes had been pinned on Steve Peat (UK), the current World Cup Champion. However despite carrying a serious injury from yesterday's 4-Cross final he still managed 19th place.

The Siemens mobile X-Lake Jump in the Loch, which begins at 8pm on Friday 30 May, will see six BMX riders and six mountain bikers take turns to speed down a 7m ramp, shoot off a 3m high kicker, climbing up to 5m high in the air, then pull off a range of unique and original stunts before plunging into the deep of Loch Linnhe.

Tue, 20.1.03:
The World's Toughest Freeride Mountain Bike Event - Set To Roll Today In Jindabyne

Twenty-seven of the world's foremost freeriders from nine countries have converged on Jindabyne, NSW, to take on a course significantly harder than the kilometre-long track that dropped 300 vertical metres from start to finish in 2002.

This January, that course has been abandoned in favour of something harder: The new track is longer and more spectacular, and includes a 30-foot vertical drop, a 45-foot step down gap, rhythm jumps, wall rides and a sled saw ? a giant moving see-saw on rails that's never been seen before in mountain biking.

The AUD$15,000 event is a two-day invitation-only competition that will showcase 27 of the world's best and most unhinged competitors and free riders. "Freeriding" is the process of mountain biking up, over and down difficult man-made and natural terrain.

There's no stopwatch; 11 judges will base their scoring criteria on technique, control, fluidity and overall impression. There are also no "soft" options, as riders either take on a choice of difficult technical lines through a section, or ride around an obstacle completely (aka the "chicken" line).

Normally sleepy Jindabyne is the gateway to the winter time ski fields of the Snowy Mountains. The town remains untouched by the bushfires in the region.
